History has again been made with Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo earning another accolade with the renaming of Madeira Airport. The airport is now to be known as 'Aeroporto Cristiano Ronaldo' after a lengthy campaign on behalf of fans and residents of the island. The Portuguese president, prime minister and many of Ronaldo's girlfriends past and present were in attendance for the unveiling. Batman also arrived, even if a little late.
During the event confusion arose as a bronze statue - supposedly of Ronaldo was also unveiled. The stature arguably bears more resemblance to Wayne Rooney, one of Ronaldos former teammates or Ian Dowie, a former premier league footballer. Many guests in attendance seemed frightened when the veil was lifted over bronze sculpture with a large gasp from the audience. Some parents asking their children to close their eyes.
Ronaldo managed to hold his composure at the unveiling although was overheard saying to the presenter "Fela da puta, Is this suppose to be me or Wayne Rooney?".
Emanuel Santos, a former worker at the airport and sculptor of the statue confessed to being self-taught (over 2 years) and stated that the statue took 15 days to complete. It was also created without having met Ronaldo, instead relying on photographs to create the masterpiece. He insists he did not use Google photos and accidentally snatch a photo of Wayne Rooney. Either way Santos is pleased with the end result and insists Ronaldo has given it his blessing
"I asked him what he[Ronaldo] thought of the result and he said he liked it."
Ronaldo now has his own museum, hotel and school named after him with many believing plans are firmly afoot to renaming Madiera to Ronaldoland.
Along with the takeover of Madeira Island the future of Portugese football is set for a bright future. If his womanising continues and his offspring are half as decent at kicking footy as their famous father they can expect to challenge for the world cup the years to come.
